Mehmet Oz in 2012 as a weight reduction “holy grail.” With his television show’s recent focus on weight loss systems, the fresh fruit is back on the radar, but is Garcinia cambogia actually the fat loss “holy grail” that Oz claims it to be?
In to treat constipation and conventional medicine, Garcinia cambogia has been employed as a stool softener. The fruit is getting lots of supporters after the product was featured by Oz on his tv series. While he recommended it as another fat loss miracle, the evidence for Garcinia cambogia’s effectiveness is doubtful at best.
Garcinia cambogia extract is known as hydroxycitric acid and it is available in Hydroxycut. There is concern about the weight loss supplement following several cases of hepatotoxicity (liver injury or disappointment), according to a notice published in the Globe Journal of Gastroenterology.
In a greater meta – analysis of Garcinia cambogia studies, printed in the Journal of Obesity, studies and nine tests were analyzed to ascertain what effects the fresh fruit had on weight loss. In the studies, 706 participants altogether were given Garcinia cambogia and the scientists found that, over the studies, the extract did have a little, but statistically significant, influence on weight reduction but ultimately will not have clinical meaning. There were some side effects associated with hyrdoxycitric acid, including “headache, skin allergy, frequent cold, and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms.” In one study, GI side effects were two times as likely in the hydroxycitric acid group when compared with the placebo group.
Garcinia cambogia and HCA has been studied since the 1990s, and one of the first studies on the fruit’s impact on weight loss was published in the Diary of the American Medical Organization. The study was a 12 – week randomized, double – blind, placebo – controlled trial that involved 142 participants. While the other team was given a placebo half were provided HCA. There was no statistical variation between either team, meaning HCA was merely as great as placebo when it found aiding in weight loss, while weight was lost by both groups.
Newer studies, including a 2008 study involving humans and bloodstream levels of sex hormones, have quelled these fears, while a 2005 research involving overweight rats caused concern due to testis toxicity. As for overall health issues including the use of HCA or Garcinia cambogia, in terms of safety and effectiveness, a 2012 study, printed in Critical Reviews of Food Research and Nutrition, mentioned that the use of the supplement based on recommended doses appears to be secure but there have yet to be any long-term studies focusing on safety. The researchers write, “There is still little proof to support the potential effectiveness and long-term advantages of Gary. cambogia ingredients. With regard to toxicity and safety, it’s important to observe that except in rare instances, studies performed in experimental animals have not documented increased mortality or significant poisoning.”
Ultimately, it seems Garcinia cambogia is not everything it is made by Oz out to become. While the results are undetermined, that is proof enough that the fruit, or HCA, isn’t the “holy grail” where individuals may take the supplement and watch the pounds fly off.
